Every room needs something unexpected so it isn’t staid and boring. We don’t mean something necessarily outlandish like a large over stuffed horse (although if you have the room and like horses why not?), just something out of context, not predictable that might show off your sense of humour for example.
As we mentioned in our recent Facebook post, it could be a small unusual statue or wall decor, an unexpected light such as an outdoor chandelier on a balcony, different furniture or lighting styles or an unusual rug.
Here are some more examples and potentially ideas to add that surprise element to your room. Refer to the pictures.
Animals to Admire
Add a scarf or hat to a wall hung deer. Even change the clothing seasonally to keep up the interest. Alternatively, an animal sculpture be it small or large such as the giraffe in Sculptors Jean-Francois Furth’s unusual home in Marrakech.
Fireplaces with a difference
Add a fabulous sculpture in place of a fire screen. Don’t have a fireplace but want to create the feeling of a log fire, why not a large oversized painting of a logs to create the warmth and interest.
Some people get nervous using oversized art. In our example the horse painting is wonderfully placed to look like it’s a real part of the room. The other painting is not only a focal point but in a room of only neutral colours the pop of red is unexpected and visually arresting.
Instead of walls why not replace them with glass such as the industrial looking glass panels shown in the first picture. In the second, Thom Filicia used a large horse sculpture to divide the living room from the dining room in this loft apartment.
Now look around your room and think what you could do or add to create the unexpected. Remember, it could be as simple as a couple of fabulous cushions, a rug or sculpture. Just use a little imagination and enjoy.
