Spruce up your entryway

Have you noticed your front entrance recently?  Does it welcome your visitors and set the tone for the rest of the house or is it merely a portal that lets people in and out?

Have you noticed your front entrance recently?  Does it welcome your visitors and set the tone for the rest of the house or is it merely a portal that lets people in and out?

Here’s some simple things you can do to spruce up your entrance and go from drab to fab:

  • Check the state and quality of your door and door jamb.  Does your door fit properly so there are no massive gaps to let cold air in or out depending on the time of year?  Is the door framed neat tidy and in proportion to the door?

  • If all is good, simply use paint to refresh your door.  Make it stand out from the rest of the house with an unexpected colour or a different but more neutral colour to your existing home.

  • Do you need new hardware such as a door handle, lock, pull knob, door knocker, house numbers?  Are they all the same finish such as brushed chrome or brass or does it look like a hodge podge of materials that look like you’ve just used leftovers?

  • Is your doorway well lit to welcome guests or even the family home at night?  Updating the lighting fixtures can make all the difference.

  • Do you have a clean and welcoming doormat for guests to wipe their feet on before they drag the outside in?  There are so many smart and quirky door mats around now.

  • Ensure your visitors can clearly see the house number from the road.  There is nothing worse than wondering if you’ve got the right house.

  • Add fresh plants to welcome guests if there is room.  Plants and pots come in so many different shapes and sizes, there’s bound to be something to suit everyone’s taste and style.
